چکیده

1. The kinetics of the reaction between HCHO and I-ascorbic acid or chemically related substances have been studied. 2. Indirect evidence is produced for the possible structure of the HCHO-1-ascorbic acid complex. / 3. Lugg's method for determination of I-ascorbic acid has been examined from the point of view of the above experiments, and necessary precautions are stressed. 4. Suggestions for other methods for the determination of I-ascorbic acid in the presence of reductic acid and reductone are advanced.

A spectrophotometric study of blood group A-specific substance isolated from hog gastric mucosa.

The isolation from hog gastric mucosa of homogeneous preparations of the polysaccharide-amino acid complex possessing the ability to inhibit the isoagglutination of human blood group A cells (1) has been hindered not only by dilliculties of manipulation and the presence in gastric mucosa of substances having properties similar to those of blood group A-specific substance, but also by the fact t...

The fucose-binding lectins from Lotus tetragonolobus have been purified (1-3), characterized, and shown to be specific for oligosaccharides containing fucosyl residues on C-2 of DGalfll--~4DGlcNAc I (type 2 chains) but not for DGalfll-->3DGlcNAc (type 1 chains) similarly substituted (3, 4). In addition, the Lo~us lectin precipitated with H, A2 and Le a, but failed to interact with A1 or B blood...

a qualitative method for the analysis of the hydrolysis products of complex polysaccharides. Interest especially centres in the general class of mucopolysaccharides-polysaccharides which contain hexosamines and which frequently show a special capacity for forming combinations with proteinsthe reactions of which may be of considerable importance in the storage behaviour of foodstuffs. The specif...

The estimation of mucin in gastric juice.

The importance of mucin as a constituent of gastric mucus and of acid gastric juice has been generally recognized (2). Numerous methods for the quantitative determination of mu&n have been described, the estimation of the reducing power having been the method almost universally used. The viscosity, acid-combining power, nitrogen content, and iodinecombining power have each been considered as a ...

Degradation of blood group antigens in human colon ecosystems. I. In vitro production of ABH blood group-degrading enzymes by enteric bacteria.

Human feces contain enzymes produced by enteric bacteria that degrade the A, B, and H blood group antigens of gut mucin glycoproteins. We have studied their production in fecal cultures to determine if such cultures can be a source for enzyme purification and to explore how blood group antigen-degrading enzymes are adapted in individual human colon ecosystems. They were present in fecal culture...
